What is Pairwise Prioritization? A Guide to the Pairwise Ranking Method

Pairwise prioritization, also known as pairwise comparison, is a decision-making technique used to rank a list of items by comparing them against each other in pairs. Instead of trying to rank a long list of options all at once, you make a series of simpler judgments: "Is A more important than B?". This method is highly effective at reducing the complexity of decision-making and minimizing cognitive bias.

How to Do Pairwise Comparison

The process is straightforward:

  1. List Your Items: Write down all the options you need to prioritize.
  2. Compare in Pairs: Take two items and ask a fixed question: "Which is more important, A or B?" Repeat across matchups until every item has been judged.
  3. Score the Wins: Each time an item is chosen as more important, it gets a "win".
  4. Rank the Results: After the comparisons are made, the items are ranked — a well-designed tool derives the full order automatically.

How Many Comparisons Are Needed?

Comparing every item against every other takes n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 matchups — 45 for a 10-item list. Optimized tools use a merge-sort strategy that needs only around n × log₂(n), roughly 25 comparisons for the same 10 items.
